Rationale

Through my brochure the main idea is revealing 3 beautiful serene locations (cafes) in Wellington. This idea revolved around something I was emotionally invested in. I tend to get quite homesick living in a different city, and living a different lifestyle to what I've been brought up in. My home is in a rural setting, so it is very easy going and peaceful. This is what I wanted to find in my locations to portray calm, serene, peaceful environments where you can completely relax if you get homesick, or even just need a break from the big city lifestyle. Emotive qualities is a huge factor in these locations to ensure my atmosphere approach is well understood and taken on board when viewing my brochure.

The use of typography has been chosen to integrate with the emotive feelings I wanted to portray, as well as integrating with my compositions. The grid I used has been changed multiple times as my journey through the process went on, changing each time my ideas changed to match with the layout and composition in which I was applying to my spreads. Visual language is again portraying personal emotive feelings as well as emotive feelings you would expect to receive from these specific locations.

Through this journey of creating my own brochure I have learnt many technical skills as well as

the actual creating of the brochure and how important the finer details are when finalising. Composition was a huge struggle of mine personally with a lot of wasted time in thought of what if this composition looks terrible, or looks great. Trying things out is something I learnt importance of. Investigating further into my design knowledge and creating something with thought and process behind it can go along way with an awesome outcome. Overall I think my brochure has been successful in some ways, although I am not happy with my final hand in. I feel as though I could have done better in so many aspects, even though I think it portrays what I intended it to, it could have been presented in a much more creative approach. Only practice can improve this, so I look forward to creating more designs with the knowledge I have gained from this assignment.

7th spread

This colour works a lot better with the emotive quality I'm trying to portray which obviously then links with the dominant word. Think its ready for printing. Happy with the outcome, although if I had more time or could do it all over again would defiantly do a lot of things differently. Overall I think it reflects what I wanted it too, and makes me feel easy going, and relaxed when flicking through it.

6th spread

Absolutely love the cover now, although not the colour of it at all! the dominance of the word 'serene' looks so much better and works so well for the brochure as thats completely what I was trying to get across in my ideas. The colour needs to be less yuck looking and more free, calm and SERENE looking. will change this in next spread, been doing some final touch ups, in order to get completely ready for printing. Nearly there.

5th spread

In this progress Im basically just playing around with the colour trying to find the one that best represents the emotive qualities that Im trying to portray. Cover is the first thing you look at when viewing this brochure so it needs to instantly give off the feeling that I'm looking for, being clam, peaceful, all serene like emotive qualities.
Still need to change the cover somehow with the size and wording. Been talking with Matt about this, and think I will create 'Serene' as the dominant text for the cover, so will explore this more in my next critiquing of the spread.

Creating symbols

Creating symbols was actually surprisingly fun. The smiley faces were easy, they were done in illustrator, and the other two where done in photoshop. I just looked at a few location points and person symbols online and went from there. They were a bit more complex just because of the curves etc, and them having sharp lines.

4th spread

Starting to look a lot better. the cover and back spread don't look as childish anymore, which is what I needed to get away from! (it wasn't what i was trying to (portray at all!) The colour in the back ground of the 1st and last spread is alright actually I don't mind it, it makes you feel calm when looking at it, although would like to try out a few different colours to see if it will change the mood much.
'serene cafes' needs to be changed after talking with Fay I realised this. Serene needs to be emphasised a lot more, and maybe completely take out the 'cafes' altogether. Composition wise it is working a lot better on the front spread, Its my favourite composition through the brochure and showing this on the front spread does a lot of good for my over all brochure, creating something that someone might actually want to take a look at.

I have also entered in some paragraph styles into my whole body of text, which is looking way better, playing around with indenting as well, works well for my spread.

Needed to change the quotes on the reviews page as Fay and Matt hated the quotations being bigger than the actual text, which in actual fact when printed it looked terrible! (looked better in my mind)

Happy with the progress!

Simple Map for intro page

Created this just in illustrator, with the paint brush tool. Just to get an understanding of whereabouts everything is in scale.

Creating maps + map research

Map Research

Creating my own maps, was a lot harder than expected! Especially the fact that Chocolate Dayz Cafe was so far away from the other 2 which were more central Wellington. Due to this I have created 3 separate ones for each location as well as a very simple map which I have integrated into the intro spread. This reveals the distance of each location as well s the factor of water being in the middle of CBD to Days Bay.

Reviews Page (extra Page)

I was very stuck on what to do for my extra page so asked my flatmates what they would want to know if they were to take a look at my brochure. The all completely agreed that knowing what the location, food, service etc... is like from other everyday normal customers are, and how the responded to the cafe. So i jumped on trip advisor and searched up each location and went through them retrieving the ones I wanted to use in my brochure and then went on to quote them and create a reviews page.

Spread 3

I have actually completely override my design before this one, and didn't save it. But it was printed off, so will put in my workbook. I am very happy with the progress in my work, it is finally starting to come together and look like a brochure that you may pick up in a shop.

After talking with Matt and Fay I came to realise a lot of things, and a lot of faults in my design, for one the map is far to basic and doesn't really reveal any kind of information. I also need to create a paragraph style for my text as I haven't set one up at all, so that will be a must for the future fix ups. Also need to identify the main words in my brochure such as 'serene' on the front spread, and then all the location names!
May also take off the 'Cafe' at the end of each location title, as Fay and Matt said I won't need them due to it being quite obvious thats what they are, and its not my main point of the brochure, more just locating serene locations.

NEED to add some kind of colour to the front and back spread. Bit too much white space in these designs, wouldn't be something that would grab your eye, because theres too much.
Think the first spread looks a bit childish also, need to create a different feeling, don't want a childish emotive quality to be apart of my brochure.

Overall I think my design is slowly coming together.

My text for each location, + intro texts

Botanical:

If you’re a lover of nature and admirer of beauty then you’ll fall in love with the botanical gardens. Whereas, if you’re a lover of all things above and also appreciate the smooth taste of a coffee bean then you simply must work a visit to the Picnic café that is perfectly placed in the heart of the gardens. Overlooking the Lady Musgrave rose garden with its symmetrical design and well looked after breathtaking roses you can guarantee yourself an afternoon well spent.

With an accommodating well presented café layout and a pristine kitchen the Picnic café never fails to present to you a lunch that satisfies all needs. Surrounded by people from all walks of life, the beaming sun draping over the protective umbrellas and the chirping of birds you’ll never forget your experience with us.

Using local ingredients that are infused with fresh flavours the picnic café accommodates the flavours of a rough last night or a light meal. You’ll surely never be disappointed when you can tick us off your café list of places to visit.

Olive:

Being a fan of the perfect coffee bean extraction and the fresh clean-cut presentation of a café in central wellington, finding the unique olive café always comes as a surprise to walkers by. The petite yet flavour some café is located in the heart of the city and is very modest from the exterior, yet when you find yourself intrigued you learn happily that there is a secret garden located out the back of their well designed pristine front of house presentation.

Walking through this back entrance you almost stumble into an entire seeming-like ecosystem that is made up of a vast arrangement of plant life carefully constructed to surround and engulf every customer, giving privacy and character. A front and back barista means your coffee will always be served hot with a smile and a welcome.

As the night progresses the café transforms into a secluded restaurant with a menu that is simply salivating. From their scallop pork belly to their twice roasted duck leg this simplistic menu has something for everyone dining in.
Under candle light and surrounded by nature this romantic spot is a crowd pleaser for the more romantic dates and also for the calm diners.
With a calm and friendly environment created by all the staff at olive it’s hard to not make this café a daily or a nightly regularity in your social circle.

Chocolate Dayz Café:

If you’re after a secluded location with a view of the finest city New Zealand has to offer then you most definitely should make your way over to Days bay. After a beautiful drive along all of the bays wellington has to offer or a brief enjoyable ferry ride, which shows breathtaking perspectives of the capital you’ll find yourself in the captivating location that is Days bay. Not long after arriving you should stumble over the Chocolate Dayz Café, where you’re guaranteed a welcoming essence and a friendly face upon arrival. After your journey you’re likely to be prepared to devour one of their kiwi classic fish and chips or a warming soup of the day!

Upon ordering you’ll have the not so easy task that is seating, ocean front isn’t something wellington falls short of but an ocean front view of the countries capital with gasping mountain faces and turquoise deeps seas isn’t something so easy to come by. With their fully licensed bar and experienced team behind the coffee machine there is something for all pallets. Nothing quite compares to the aurora felt when you are surrounded with good company, friendly locals and a delicious kiwi classic meal. It certainly is one of those cafes that are worth the trip to experience for the first or for the hundredth time!

Intro
Finding any old cafe thats closest is something simple and reachable, but finding that cafe that’s location devotes so much quality to the experience is something that is priceless. Making your way to any of these locations you’ll commemorate memories, induce discussions and maybe even have the opportunity to meet the locals who make it all happen behind the scenes.

Take the time out, make it a road-trip or even just a pop around the corner, there’s something for everyone in Wellington’s finest serene cafes.

Spread research

Starting of my spread design

These spreads arnt bad for my first attempt at layout etc.. although theres a lot to do from here, and I think more spread research is a must! At the moment the style I am wanting is gentle, simple, and very calm looking/fresh in a way. This may be a little to simple, in the fact that anyone could create this kind of spread, it hasn't been very challenging, and id like to challenge myself a little bit!

Playing around with composition

I think these compositions reveal the process in how I made them, as well as expressing the emotive quality each location has. Through the use of colour and symbol.

Shell + Rose Geometric composition

Also very happy with how these compositions turned out! Although the shell isn't my favourite, still reflects what Im wanting it to though!
